Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Kelsey McRill, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. While there is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships, there can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections, offer encouragement, and provide the kind of peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one. Their willingness to reach out, share their experiences, and invite others into community life helps turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at Hudson Grande Senior Living, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make in helping new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Creating Comfort Before Move-In Day

A successful move-in experience begins before a resident ever unpacks a box. At Hudson Grande Senior Living, the Resident Services team starts building that connection early by introducing themselves during the tour and staying in communication once a deposit has been made.

By move-in day, the goal is to help each new resident feel expected, prepared for, and genuinely welcomed. Having a welcome gift and packet ready in the apartment is one simple way to create that feeling right away. These small touches show residents and their families that the team has been thinking about them and preparing for their arrival.

Resident Ambassadors also play an important role in those first introductions. When appropriate, they learn the names of new residents and their move-in dates so they can help welcome them in a thoughtful way. The Resident Services Director may help guide that first meeting, often in the dining room, where conversation can happen naturally and the new resident can begin to feel part of community life.

When it does not feel overwhelming, new residents may also meet residents with similar interests or members of the welcoming committee. These early introductions help ease uncertainty and give new residents a friendly place to begin.

Turning Neighbors Into Friends

Some of the most meaningful gestures are also the simplest. Resident Ambassadors may invite someone new to share a meal, attend an event, or sit with them during an activity. These invitations can make a new resident feel included without pressure.

That peer-to-peer connection often feels different from staff encouragement. A Resident Ambassador understands what it feels like to be new because they once stood in that same place. They know what it means to adjust to a new routine, meet new people, and find a sense of belonging. Because of that shared experience, new residents may feel more comfortable accepting an invitation from another resident.

A senior man smiles, holding a donut, at Holliday Farms Senior Living.

One recent example involved a gentleman who felt nervous about moving in. After meeting the gentlemen’s table and a few of the community’s social men, he began to feel more at home. Those connections gave him a foundation of friendship and helped him settle into community life with more confidence.

Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of Hudson Grande by serving as the face of the resident community. In many ways, they help create the first impression. Through their kindness, openness, and willingness to include others, they help create a welcoming and safe space for new family members.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents—they help build the culture of our community. Through simple acts of kindness, genuine friendships, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days, but the relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
