Hudson Grande Senior Living Discusses How to Have Meaningful Visits With Someone Living With Dementia

Category: Dementia Resources

Author: Kimberly Becton, Memory Care Director

Dementia is an umbrella term for loss of memory and other thinking abilities severe enough to interfere with daily life. When someone is diagnosed with dementia, at least two parts of the brain are dying. Dementia is progressive, chronic, and terminal, which creates many challenges.  Relationships continue to be vital to families, regardless of a dementia diagnosis. At Hudson Grande Senior Living we have some ideas and suggestions to help you have successful visits with your loved ones.

Family members and friends do make an impact on how the visit goes. If you’re sad, residents are going to wonder why you’re sad or be sad themself. If you have high energy and are bouncing around from one thing to another, that’s not good either, because they can’t have more than one thing to comprehend at a time. Just be calm and enjoy each other, they will be happy to see you!

A family member can make the visit more pleasant by bringing pictures or food, playing music, or providing an activity the individual has enjoyed in their past. The visitation should always be a pleasant one. Sometimes just sitting next to your loved one and listening to their favorite songs can get a couple of smiles and provide what they need.

Certain times are better times to visit than others. I always say mornings and early afternoons are the best. With many individuals living with dementia, evening hours are more challenging for them.

When it is time to end your visit, keep it short with a smile on your face. Assure them you will see them soon. If you think you’re going to have a problem, like they are asking you to take them home, you can ask a team member to engage with them while you leave.

We hope this information has given you some fresh tips and ideas for visiting someone living with dementia. Quality connections are essential for the person living with the disease, as well as yourself. If your visit still doesn’t go well, don’t beat yourself up. Every day is a new day. Be patient and you will figure out what works best. Giving your time to someone living with dementia is the best gift possible.
