Fall Prevention Made Simple

Category: Health & Wellness

Author: Megan Simms, Wellness Director

Preventing falls is an important part of helping older adults maintain their safety, confidence, and independence. While falls can happen for many reasons, simple changes to everyday routines and living spaces can help reduce common risks. Understanding potential hazards, knowing when to ask for assistance, and working together can make a meaningful difference.

At Hudson Grande Senior Living, I believe fall prevention starts with creating a safe environment and developing habits that help residents move confidently throughout their apartments. Everyday items and routines can present unexpected risks, but small adjustments can make a meaningful difference.

As Wellness Director, I encourage residents and families to pay attention to potential hazards, communicate changes in mobility, and make sure the right support is always within reach.

Creating Safer Apartments Through Simple Adjustments

Some of the most common fall hazards in residents’ apartments include loose rugs, poor lighting, and cluttered walkways.

Rugs and floor mats can shift, bunch up, or create uneven surfaces that increase the risk of tripping. Whenever possible, I recommend removing loose rugs from the apartment.

If a resident prefers to keep a rug, using a nonslip backing and making sure it lies flat can help reduce the risk of movement.

Lighting is another important consideration, especially during the night. Getting up in a dark room can make it difficult to see furniture, flooring changes, or other potential obstacles.

I encourage residents to use nightlights or leave a bathroom light on when appropriate. Having enough light along the path between the bedroom and bathroom can make nighttime movement safer.

Clutter and narrow walkways also create challenges, particularly for residents who use walkers or other assistive devices.

Too much furniture or belongings left on the floor may make it difficult to move around comfortably. Keeping the apartment tidy and arranging furniture to create wider pathways can help reduce these risks.

Families can support these efforts by helping residents evaluate their living spaces and remove unnecessary obstacles.

The goal is to maintain a comfortable, familiar apartment while making it easier to navigate safely.

Taking Time to Move Safely and Recognize Changes

Along with reducing apartment hazards, I encourage residents to practice a few simple daily habits that support their independence.

One of the most important is wearing appropriate footwear. Properly fitting shoes with slip-resistant soles can help provide stability and traction while walking.

For residents who use them, gripper socks may also be an option when appropriate for their individual needs. However, supportive footwear is generally preferable for walking.

Another important habit is keeping assistive devices within reach.

Residents who use walkers or canes should make sure these devices are nearby before sitting down or getting into bed.

If a walker is across the room, someone may be tempted to take a few steps without it. Keeping the device close makes it easier to use the support they need.

I also encourage residents to take their time when changing positions.

Moving too quickly from sitting to standing can sometimes cause dizziness or unsteadiness. Instead, residents should rise slowly and pause before beginning to walk.

That brief pause provides an opportunity to recognize whether they feel balanced and steady.

Residents should also pay attention to changes in their mobility or strength.

If someone begins feeling dizzy, weak, or unsteady, they should stop moving and sit down safely if possible. They should then notify a nurse or member of the Wellness team and request assistance.

Our team can help evaluate the concern and contact the resident’s physician to arrange follow-up when appropriate.

Families and team members also play an important role in recognizing changes.

If a resident begins having difficulty walking, seems less steady, or needs more assistance than usual, those observations should be communicated promptly.

Early communication helps us understand what may have changed and whether additional support or evaluation is needed.

My simplest fall-prevention tip is to pause and find your balance before taking your first step.

When standing up from a chair or bed, take your time. Make sure you feel steady, have your walker or cane within reach, and can see where you are going.

If you feel unsteady, sit back down safely and ask for assistance rather than attempting to walk.

Fall prevention often comes down to everyday awareness. Clear pathways, adequate lighting, proper footwear, and consistent use of mobility aids can all help residents move with greater confidence.

At Hudson Grande Senior Living, our goal is to help residents maintain their independence while having the support they need to feel safe and comfortable at home.
