Senior Living Myths: My Story

Category: Senior Living

Author: Cheryl Walker, Executive Director

Arrow Senior Living is known for doing things a little differently and challenging the status quo within the industry. It’s just who we are! Even with all the technological conveniences of today such as social media and websites, it is still common to meet individuals with a skewed perception of what senior living looks like. In this blog, I want to share my senior living journey, why I remain committed to the industry, the biggest myth I believe exists, and how to help others overcome the myths surrounding our beautiful Hudson Grande Senior Living community and services.

I interned for a dietitian tech program at a nursing community, where I developed a deep connection with the residents and discovered my affinity for this demographic. That experience marked the beginning of my 27-year journey serving older adults.

Each day, I eagerly anticipate new challenges and strive to find solutions that benefit everyone involved. Today, for instance, I coordinated with an out-of-state hospital to arrange for a resident’s discharge to our community for a respite stay close to family. Additionally, when our scheduled entertainer cancelled at the last minute for Happy Hour, we improvised with a karaoke hour for both residents and staff.

Living Vibrantly: Debunking the Myth of Idle Time in Senior Living at Cedar Trails

One of the most prevalent misconceptions about senior living is the idea that older adults move into a community and simply idle away their time. Contrary to this belief, senior living offers a vibrant array of programming and events. These programs integrate residents into the broader community, enabling them to live their fullest lives.

During tours with prospective residents, there’s often a discussion about the activities available. Some may assume that all we do is eat and play bingo, but we provide a comprehensive calendar showcasing the richness of our daily schedules. We frequently extend invitations to prospects to join current residents for meals and programs. This allows them firsthand experience of the engaging events and social interactions that seniors enjoy. Facilitating opportunities for aging adults to socialize and connect with peers is paramount to their well-being.

I hope you found this helpful, and I encourage you to share it with others because here at Arrow, we are committed to reshaping the perception of senior living! Search #whatseniorlivinglookslike, and you will find so many great things that happen in our community every single day.
