Hudson Grande Senior Living Strives to Empower Their Team Members

Category: Senior Living

Author: Cheryl Walker, Executive Director

As leaders, we hold the power to inspire, uplift, and bring out the best in our team members. By fostering an environment of empowerment, we can unlock their potential, drive organizational success, and ultimately enhance the lives of the older adults we serve. As the Executive Director of Hudson Grande Senior Living, I want to explore what empowerment means to me, its impact on the workload, and the strategies I use to empower my team members, as well as the current threats to the senior living industry and how empowerment can be a catalyst for overcoming these challenges.

Empowering my team means I am trusting them to understand the vision and accomplish goals. I am giving team members the autonomy to make decisions and gain confidence through achievement. Empowering the team shows value in every member. Team members who are empowered feel more confident in their abilities and tend to deliver projects with greater care. This allows employees to take ownership of their work, resulting in increased productivity, happier employees, and a healthy workplace culture. It also allows me to address other areas of need or concern.

I delegate projects or ideas the team wants to improve upon, allowing them the space and decision-making ability to move the project forward. There is no better way to allow leadership to grow than when you allow room for trial and error. I set the ground rules to allow for mistakes and a way to talk through the errors as a learning experience.

I think burnout is a huge threat to the healthcare industry. Empowering people to make change, be part of something better, and feel they are empowered to make a difference without being micromanaged keeps leaders engaged and valued.

When I was a new Executive Director attempting to grow my team, I would delegate duties or small tasks to them. It did not take me long to realize you cannot delegate and micromanage at the same time. You must let people stumble and sometimes make big mistakes to learn. Owning and correcting mistakes is one of the best ways to grow leadership traits.

In conclusion, as a leader, empowering your team members is not just a noble goal; it is a strategic imperative. By fostering an environment of trust, autonomy, and continuous growth, you unlock the full potential of your team, reduce your own workload, and enhance the well-being of the aging adults you serve. Empowerment becomes a powerful tool to navigate the challenges faced by the senior living industry, fostering resilience, innovation, and sustainable solutions. So, let’s embrace the transformative power of empowerment and lead our teams toward a brighter future.
